I remember going to Brookgreen as a teenager and seeing the enormity, the aesthetic and the priceless contribution the Huntingtons gave us. At that time, we used a small black and white map to get around the grounds, I remember wishing that I could get lost and just wander alone.
The map was an idea starting point for me. As I researched Brookgreen, I came across aerial shots taken in 1966. The map, the layout, the meaning behind building a sculptural garden amidst past plantations provoked me. I thought about trees and plants and the people who lived, worked and died there. What is old and what is new and what is continuing into the future? It all runs together; like the limbs of live oak trees dancing with statues.
The trees are testimonials that the past happened, the good and the ugly. Brookgreen allows us to acknowledge the past, celebrate art and nature and look forward to coming back in the future.
